    Pilots Flying Tired

Below is a video news report on a problem that all airline pilots, especially so-called "regional" airline pilots know all too well.

We've all seen or slept in the crash pads, the crew lounges that look like camp sites, and experienced the fatigue that results from crew rest and duty time rules that don't even attempt to follow NASA recommendations.

I'm making a collection of stories, anecdotes, and news reports in the hopes that greater publicity will result in greater public knowledge and pressure on the government to change the rules in a meaningful way.

Try as I might, I was unable to embed this video in the forum. Please follow the link: http://abcnews.go.com/Blotter/video/...s-sky-12898456
I intend to fly until my beard gets caught in the propeller. And since I don't plan on growing a beard, that may be a while. Ernest K. Gann, age 69

It is a gigantic embarrassment to me that the USA is the only major advanced nation that has yet to adopt the scientifically derived crew rest and duty time limitations recommended by NASA.

One wonders if the FAA works for the flying public who pays their salaries or for the lobbyists working for the Air Transport Association...

Also, it is interesting that here in the states, there are new rest rules going into effect in 2014 that are well known, yet until January 31, our company plans to keep using the old scheduling for reduced rest overnights and 7-leg days. Wonder how that'd sound in a courtroom after an accident that violated the new, but not-yet-adopted safety rules?

    Agreed, PP.

The problem is that the business is basically a casino with the "actuaries" setting the odds.

The senior management/owners of the companies know EXACTLY how often they will have an accident and they only invest in training/crews/rest/etc. the minimum amount required to achieve their standard of, to borrow a term from SMS, "ALARP" (as low as reasonably practicable.

It's really no surprise that the folks whose G-500 pilots have PRO cards from their six month Flight Safety recurrent training, have an ALARP stardard that differs from that of the beings who actually sit in the front office of the airline aircraft and will, in most cases, arrive at the site of the accident first.
